WUN Research Mobility Programme - Information for Visitors to the University of Sydney
Coming to Sydney
Anyone interested in coming to the University of Sydney through the WUN Research Mobility Programme (RMP) should contact Karen McLaren in the first instance, she will be able to assist with all aspects of your enquiry.
Accommodation
RMP awardees should note that short-term accommodation in and around the University of Sydney is limited and can be expensive. Although the University of Sydney does offer some limited on-campus accommodation, this is not available to visitors during semester (March-June & August-November) and can be expensive. RMP visitors to Sydney should budget approximately $450 - $550 a week for accommodation.
Previous RMP visitors to Sydney have recommended the following accommodation:
Cambridge Lodge
Located in the pleasant suburb of Stanmore, the Cambridge Lodge offers clean, comfortable, modern single rooms with en suite for approximately AUD$480 per week. It is situated close to trains and buses that will have you on campus in 10-15 minutes, or alternatively, a 30-minute walk. Dorm rooms are available for those on a tighter budget. Visit the website.
Alishan International Guest House
Alishan International Guest House is a charming boutique hotel located in the suburb of Glebe. It is situated just minutes away from both the University of Sydney campus and the heart of the city and offers guests a welcoming and homely place to rest and relax. Single rooms without an en suite start at approximately AUD$525 per week. Dorm rooms are available for those on a tighter budget. Visit the website.

Visas
Most UK, US, EU, Norway and Hong Kong (SAR) passport-holders travelling to Australia for up to six weeks will be able to visit using an ETA (Business Entrant - Short Validity) (Subclass 977) Visa. This visa will allow visitors to observe and participate in research for a maximum of six weeks and to visit Australia for up to three months at any one time. This visa can be arranged through a travel agent or online. More details are available at the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship website.
Those seeking to participate in research for a period longer than six weeks can apply to be sponsored for an Occupational Trainee 442 Visa or a Visiting Academic 419 Visa, depending on their level of experience and personal circumstances . These visas allow visitors to observe and participate in research for longer periods.
For more information on different visa options, please click on the pdf document “Visa Pathways for Visiting Academics”.
For individual advice on your visa requirements, please contact your closest overseas office of the Australia Department of Immigration and Citizenship.
Office facilities
Office space is very limited at the University of Sydney and an allocated work space can not always be guaranteed. Requirements for office/lab space should be discussed in advance with the host supervisor and at the very least a ‘hot desk’ arrangement can be made for the duration of the visit.
