Sustainable Development Through Green Chemistry

The Worldwide Universities Network is an international alliance of research-leading European, US and Chinese Universities, who are working together to take advantage of research and educational opportunities emerging in rapidly moving interdisciplinary areas of global significance. The Green Chemistry Partnership aims to develop international collaborative research in many traditional disciplines in addition to chemistry to promote and deliver sustainable technological solutions which provide economic, environmental and social benefits. Green Chemistry has been identified as one of the top priority areas. A partnership for promoting this area has been established and its membership has been continually expanding to involve many universities worldwide; continuous efforts are made to further broaden the involvement. The Green Chemistry Partnership aims to bring together multidisciplinary expertise from around the world facilitating breakthrough collaborative research, sharing of ideas and generally working together towards common goals. As part of our activities we now have a dedicated website on the WUN server, a database of over 160 experts whose research interests support global sustainable development, exchange visits, and collaborative projects. We also run multidisciplinary virtual seminar series, which aims to disseminate this theme and stimulate collaboration.

Our specific aims are to:

• focus on research training as a way of building collaborative activities between the partners and opportunities for links with corporate partners
• actively participate in the Global Exchange Programme to develop and deepen networks
• develop multidisciplinary collaborative research proposals including the Grand Challenge proposal
• work towards the preparation of new educational material for universities
• develop outreach activities to facilitate a better understanding of major chemistry related issues in schools and for the general public.
