Global GIS Academy - a Worldwide Universities Network consortium to develop research and teaching interests in the geographical information sciences

Global GIS Academy Vision

The WUN GIS Academy seeks to complement existing activites, such as AGILE and UCGIS, using the IT and personnel infrastructure within WUN. This will be achieved through joint initiatives with existing organisations, and also through the creation of new projects in areas in which many of the partners are extremely strong and where complementary expertise covers almost the entire breadth of GISc.

The advantages of collaboration are many, and the list of activities that the Global GIS Academy will contribute to includes the following.

Developing joint research in the following areas:

  • Geospatial data warehousing and delivery to public and private sectors
  • Visualisation and virtual reality
  • Public participation GIS
  • Development studies
  • Ocean and coastal GIS
  • GIS in the study of air and water pollution and quality
  • Medicine and health.

Collaborative research and teaching in the following areas:

  • sharing of eLearning materials;
  • Visits to partner institutions, both for faculty and graduate students;
  • Developing an eJournal devoted to GI interests, especially in teaching;
  • Joint development of new eLearning and related materials;
  • Joint development and sharing of software for GI analysis;
  • Shared supervision of graduate students, working towards the ‘ePhD’;
  • Virtual seminars, of the sort already developed within the Network, on topics of GISc interest; and
  • Joint meetings around GISC themes.
