Description

Founded in 1997, the Centre for Interdisciplinary Gender Studies (CIGS) at the University of Leeds is a large research centre in Gender Studies, bringing together over 170 academic staff from Schools across the arts and humanities, social sciences, medicine and healthcare studies.

Research

Research on gender and feminist scholarship have a long history at Leeds, and the University is home to many leading international feminist scholars. In the UK’s 2001 Research Assessment Exercise, research in the Centre was awarded the top grade of 5. Now in its tenth year, CIGS has provided a broadening framework, building on existing specialisms to incorporate studies in masculinities, sexualities, queer and trans theories. Several major international conferences have been hosted recently by the Centre including a national postgraduate conference 'Thinking Gender: the Next Generation' in June 2006, and, in a collaboration with the School of Music, the international symposium 'Staging the Feminine: The Arts of the Prima Donna 1760-1920' in July 2006, which initiated a collaborative research network on diva studies facilitated by the WUN. The Centre provides excellent space and facilities for visiting international scholars and has research links with many institutions both nationally and internationally.

The Centre facilitates six main research groupings drawn from staff and students across the University (from Development Studies, Geography, Middle-Eastern Studies, Modern Languages and Cultures, Healthcare Studies and Medicine, Psychology, Music, English, Performance, Religious Studies, etc). These emphasise cutting-edge interdisciplinary research, gender theory, and the issues that construct the gendering and control of bodies and subjects, both disciplinary and emancipatory. The intersectionalities of gender with class, race, and sexuality are at the forefront of this work, as is an internationalist outlook. The research groupings are as follows:

  • Work and Labour
  • Space and Place
  • Bodies, Technologies, and Interventions
  • Sexualities and Sexual Practices
  • Aesthetics and Consumption
  • Citizenship and Politics

Students

The activities of the Centre are coordinated by a small core academic and administrative staff, who promote a lively interdisciplinary research culture and a friendly and supportive atmosphere. The Centre is located in the Coach House, 5 Hillary Place, on the main University of Leeds campus, close to the heart of the city. Fully refurbished to an impressively high specification, the Coach House provides dedicated office space for Centre staff and PhD students. In addition a common room and kitchen provides space for all our students and members. Students are encouraged to become involved in the wide range of activities which take place within the Centre, and to make use of the resources and opportunities available in the Centre's 'partner' departments. Additionally, members of the Centre collaborate across the disciplines in both empirical and theoretical research projects. The Centre also runs an electronic discussion and news list, and organises regular social events.

PhD Study

The Centre offers a stimulating environment for postgraduate study, and hosts a programme of regular seminars, workshops and public lectures. PhD study can be started at any time during the year (although 1st October is preferred) and lasts 3 full years. Students take training modules as part of their programme but do not have a set taught element to their studies which is independent and guided by 2 specialist supervisors.

Taught Masters Programmes

CIGS offers six MA programmes studied over 1 year from Sept to Sept:

  • MA Gender Studies;
