Abstract:
China's rise is normally charted in economic terms. But its scientific rise is no less dramatic. As part of a wider plan to develop China's innovative capacity, major strategic plans for Science, Human Resource Development, and Education are all in place, each of which is designed to boost China's high level skills and promote an innovative society.
The presentation will examine China's scientific rise over recent years, particularly in terms of its impressive increase in indices of scientific output (patents, citations, articles). The contribution of China's top-tier universities, aided by policies such as 211, and 985 will also be examined, and related programmes such as 100 Talent, 1,000 Talent, and 111. More problematic issues, which are now openly discussed in China, such as corruption, and quality will also be covered.
